Error Messsages With Circlemail

Symantec Error Messages

If you have Norton Internet Security or Antispam installed, it is likely that you will see the following error message when configuring your mail client:

"An encrypted mail connection has been detected . . ."

This error message occurs as a result of using the Secured Socket Layer (SSL) protocol to provide secure email communication and to prevent internet eavesdropping, tampering, and message forgery. Norton AntiVirus email scanning will not work with the SSL protocol and therefore needs to be disabled to stop the message from showing when sending email. It is worth noting that Norton AntiVirus will still provide virus protection, but it will
perform the scan when you download attachments to your hard drive rather than when you access the email message.

To turn off Norton AntiVirus email scanning:

  • Exit any email programs that are running, such as Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express.
  • Start Norton AntiVirus. (If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.)
  • Click Options. (If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.)
  • In the left pane, click Email.
  • In the right pane, uncheck Scan incoming Email and Scan outgoing Email.
  • Click OK.
  • If you use Norton AntiVirus 2006/2005, then in the Protection Alert dialog box, on the drop-down menu, click Permanently, and then click OK.
  • Exit Norton AntiVirus.

After you have disabled email scanning, you should check that the Auto-Protect feature is turned on to ensure that unscanned attachments do not pose a threat. According to Symantec, you should first check for an Auto-Protect icon in the System Tray. If you see this icon:

  • Right-click it.
  • Click Enable.

If there is no 'Auto-Protect' icon in the System Tray, you should:

  • Click Start, Programs, and Norton AntiVirus (or Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, depending on which program you are using).
  • Click the Options menu and Norton AntiVirus.
  • In the right pane, click Auto-Protect.
  • In the left pane, click to select Enable Auto-Protect.
  • Start Auto-Protect when Windows starts up.
  • Click the OK button.
  • Click OK again.
  • Click File.
  • Click Exit.
